A Guide to Structural Steel Shapes

Structural steel comes in standard shapes — wide flange beams for bending loads, channels for frames and tracks, angles for bracing and connections, HSS tube for columns and clean frames, and pipe for posts and columns. Choosing the right shape means matching the section to the load and the connection.
Wide flange beams (W-shapes)
The workhorse of framing. Wide flange sections put material where bending stress lives — in the flanges — making them efficient for floor beams, headers, columns, and pipe racks. Designations like W8x21 mean nominal 8-inch depth at 21 pounds per foot.
Channels (C and MC shapes)
A flat back with two flanges. Channels excel as stair stringers, frame rails, tracks, and trim around openings. Junior channels offer lighter weight where full sections are overkill.
Angles (L-shapes)
Two legs at ninety degrees, equal or unequal. Angles brace, connect, frame openings, and form lintels. They are the most-improvised shape in every shop — and usually the first thing to run out.
HSS tube and pipe
Hollow sections resist twisting and look finished from every side. Square and rectangular tube frame everything from buildings to gates; pipe takes columns, bollards, and fence duty. Wall thickness drives strength — confirm it, not just the outside dimension.
Matching shape to job
Load direction, connection type, exposure, and aesthetics all vote. When in doubt, describe the application to your supplier — a service center that has cut steel for the same use a hundred times will get you to the right section quickly. Engineering-critical members always belong with your engineer.
