How to Request an Accurate Steel Quote

An accurate steel quote needs six things: the product or shape, the grade or specification, exact dimensions, quantity, any processing required, and delivery or pickup details. Include drawings when you have them. The more precise the request, the faster and tighter the price.
Start with the material, not the price
Every quote conversation goes faster when the material is unambiguous. "Two-inch pipe" can mean several different products; "2-inch Schedule 40 A53 pipe, 21-foot lengths, quantity 40" gets a number back the same call.
If you are unsure of the exact specification, describe the application — what the part does, what it connects to, what loads or fluids it sees. A good service center will help you land on the right material, and telling us up front is faster than a wrong quote.
The six pieces of an accurate request
1. Product or shape — plate, beam, angle, pipe, tube, bar, rebar. 2. Grade or specification — the ASTM designation if your job requires one. 3. Dimensions — thickness, width, length, diameter, wall. 4. Quantity — pieces, feet, or pounds. 5. Processing — cutting, bending, rolling, holes, bevels. 6. Logistics — delivery address and date, or will-call pickup.
Drawings beat descriptions
For anything processed — sheared blanks, formed profiles, rolled cylinders, coped beams, bar schedules — a drawing removes every ambiguity a sentence leaves behind. PDF, DWG, and DXF files can be uploaded directly with a Shamrock quote request.
A hand sketch with dimensions is genuinely fine. What matters is that dimensions, angles, and quantities are on paper instead of in someone’s memory.
Say when you need it
Required dates change sourcing decisions. Material on the floor in Odessa can move same-week; mill or network sourcing takes longer. Sharing your real date lets the quote reflect a plan that actually meets it.
